School of Chinese Language and Literature

The School of Chinese Language and Literature was formerly known as the Department of Chinese Language and Literature of Zhangzhou Normal University. Its history can be traced back to the established of the Chinese Department of Longxi Normal School in 1958 which later became the Fujian Second Normal College and then Zhangzhou Normal University. In June 2013, the School of Chinese Language and Literature was established.

Over the past 60 years, the predecessors of the School focused on training a great number of excellent talents. Dai Shenshi, Zheng Jingqu, Liu Xuepei, Li Tuozhi, Wu Qiushan, Chen Zhangwu achieved brilliant results in their academic fields. Moreover, there have been numerous well-known scholars, such as Chen Bingzhao, Lin Jizhong, Liu Qingzhang, Tang Zhangping, Zhang Guixing, who taught at the School later and achieved fruitful results in academic fields.

The School places a high value on the development of disciplines and majors. The discipline of Chinese Language and Literature is the traditional dominant discipline with the longest history and the strongest strength in Minnan Normal University. It has been awarded the key discipline, the characteristic key discipline, the first-level discipline and the doctoral program construction discipline in Fujian Province.

The School of Chinese Language and Literature currently has 1 discipline authorized to offer doctoral degree program, 1 discipline authorized to offer master degree program, 2 professional master degree programs and 2 bachelor’s degree programs (i.e. Chinese Language and Literature and Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages). There are 95 faculty members, including 78 professional teachers, 12 of whom are from Taiwan, China. Among the professional teachers, there are 60 having doctor’s degrees,21 professors, 32 associate professors, 8 Minjiang scholars and 3 distinguished professors. The School currently has an enrollment of 1,619 undergraduates and 324 postgraduates.

The educational principle of the School is student-oriented, and students are expected to make an effective combination of their work and studies to cultivate high-quality and practical talents. The goal of humanistic quality education is to help students develop literary appreciation ability, reading skills, independent thinking and good expression skills. Moreover, we insist on aesthetic education and encourage students to combine the study of traditional arts with life education. With the improvement of teaching quality, the School has been included in the pilot departments of the comprehensive reform of "three comprehensive education" in undergraduate colleges and universities in Fujian Province in 2019, and meanwhile, the School won the Second-Level Professional Certification of Chinese Language and Literature (Teacher Education). The major of Chinese Language and Literature was approved as the first-class undergraduate program construction point of Fujian Province in 2020 and then as the national first-class undergraduate program construction point in 2021.
