School of Journalism and Communication

The School of Journalism and Communication, formerly known as the Department of Journalism and Communication established in 2007, is one of the first batch of secondary schools established after the university was successfully renamed Minnan Normal University in 2013.

At the moment, the school has 6 undergraduate programs, namely radio and television, editing and publishing, advertising, radio and television editing and directing, network and new media and digital publishing, as well as a 1 professional master program in Journalism and Communication. There are more than 1,300 students and 51 faculty members, including 10 professors, 14 associate professors, 2 with postdoctoral experience, 18 with doctoral degrees, 3 doctoral candidates, 9 with overseas research experience and 3 bilingual teachers.

Since the establishment of the first major in Radio and Television (Editing and Directing) in 2003, the school has cultivated nearly 1,000 high-end application talents in journalism and communication for the society. The one-time employment rate of graduates reaches more than 97%. Theoretical teaching, skill teaching, practical teaching and joint education with employing units are the four highlights of the school.

The school attaches great importance to the cultivation of students' practical ability. With a total investment of about RMB 20million, it has established teaching laboratories of each major. Three provincial-level experimental demonstration centers, i.e. Media Technology Center, Journalism and Communication Major Experimental Center, and Media Art Virtual Simulation Experimental Teaching Demonstration Center have been approved and built, which takes a leading position in the same major of universities in Fujian Province. The School actively expands the channels of Industry-University-Research, keeps close contact with the industry, and contributes to the local economic development and cultural communication. It has established more than 50 professional practice bases, signing training agreements with China network channel, Southeast network, Fujian radio, film and television group, Xiamen radio and television group, as well as a number of radio stations, television stations, advertising companies, network media, etc. to provide students with favorable conditions for experiment, field training, practice and employment. It has established strategic partnerships with Beijing Film Academy, Taiwan Shin Hsin University and other well-known universities, having good interactions in news communication, film and television, animation and other aspects, and selecting undergraduate students to those universities for further study every year. The school has 1 provincial-level specialty serving local industry, 1 provincial first-class specialty, 3 provincial first-class courses, 8 provincial education reform projects and two provincial teaching achievement awards. Students have won about 80 national awards and 230 provincial awards in various competitions at all levels, such as the “KeXun Cup” International College Students' film and television works competition, the Chinese college students' advertising art competition and the innovation and entrepreneurship competition.

In the past five years, the school has won 7 National Social Science Fund projects, 10 provincial scientific research projects, published about 200 academic papers, 8 monographs and conducted 10 horizontal research projects with local enterprises. The school has successively undertaken or co-organized the Cross Strait Micro Film Culture Industry Forum in 2016, the ninth Cross Strait Forum- Cross Strait (Zhangzhou) Animation Carnival in 2017, the Cross Strait Micro Film Culture Industry Forum in 2018, the tenth Cross Strait Forum ? the fifth Cross Strait Youth New Media Cultural Innovation Forum, and the Editorial Research Academic Seminar of the Academic Activities on 60th Anniversary of Minnan Normal University, the sixth cross strait Youth New Media Summit Forum and Cross Strait Youth Micro Video Exhibition Summit in 2019, which has had a great impact both at home and abroad.

As a pilot major of innovation and entrepreneurship reform in Fujian Province, advertising has successfully explored a way to cultivate innovative and entrepreneurial talents. The "trinity of experiment, practice and actual combat" practical teaching system has been constructed by using the multi-level education modes such as practical teaching, competition platform, studio system and school enterprise cooperation mechanism has won the first prize of excellent teaching achievements of Minnan Normal University. Students have strong practical ability ,winning 1129 awards in various subject competitions.

With the development of the Internet and the rise of China's new economy, the employment prospect of advertising major is promising. With a team of high quality teachers, two provincial-level first-class courses has successfully been built. Teachers have won 13 awards in various teaching competitions, and a total of 50 have won the title of excellent instructor in various competitions.
